Connect NIBE F-series heat pumps over RS485 and understand the S-series monitoring connection over Modbus TCP/IP.
The connection and available functions differ between the F-series and the S-series. Use the section for the heat pump installed on your site: a Modbus connection for monitoring does not automatically provide heating control.
| Heat pump | Connection covered here | Function |
|---|---|---|
| F-series | RS485 / Modbus RTU through a NIBE MODBUS 40 module | The existing wired connection is described below. Available heating functions depend on the controller software; this page does not establish rollout of additional control modes. |
| S1155, S1156, S1255 and S1256 | Built-in Modbus TCP/IP | Monitoring connection currently being validated. Heating boost, blocking and direct power control are not provided by this connection. |
| Device Type | Modbus TCP (Ethernet) | RS485 |

| Nibe F-Series Heatpump | ❌ | ✅ |
The NIBE MODBUS 40 communication module is required to enable Modbus communication on the F-series heat pump.
The communication between the Sunlight Group EMS and the F-series heat pump operates via RS485.
| Device | Sunlight Group EMS model OM1 | Sunlight Group EMS model IG8 | RS485-USB converter | RS485-Ethernet converter |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | RS485 A | RS485_POS | RS485 A | TX+ |
| B | RS485 B | RS485_NEG | RS485 B | TX- |
| GND (if available) | RS GND | GND | Not available | G |
The S-series monitoring connection is currently being validated. Contact support to arrange the appropriate controller software before commissioning it. Do not use this connection as a basis for a promise of heating control.
This connection covers the S1155, S1156, S1255 and S1256 register set. These models have built-in Modbus TCP/IP, so this connection does not use the MODBUS 40 module required for the F-series route above.
With the appropriate controller software installed, open the commissioning wizard and select Heat pump → Nibe → S-Series with a Modbus TCP connection. Enter the heat pump's local IP address and port 502, then discover and add the device.
Compare the first readings with 3.1 — Operating info on the heat pump display.
If the device is reachable but not detected, check that the heat pump reports a valid BT50 room temperature between 0 °C and 50 °C. A missing room sensor or a value outside that range can prevent detection.
| Measurement group | Examples |
|---|---|
| Temperatures | Outdoor and room temperature, supply and return temperature, hot-water temperatures and brine temperatures. |
| Circulation pumps | Heating-medium and brine-pump speeds. |
| Compressor and operating state | Compressor frequency, on/off status and whether the reversing valve is in the heating or hot-water position. |
Readings depend on the sensors and accessories present on the heat pump. This connection does not provide an electrical consumption measurement in watts or kWh.
The S-series connection described here does not provide Boost, Block or a target power in watts. Keep the heat pump's own heating controls in place. A separate SG Ready or PV-contact arrangement is a different connection and is not established by enabling Modbus TCP/IP.
